El Paso is not hail alley, but it is not hail-free either. The National Weather Service has documented one-inch hail in the El Paso area during monsoon storms and gusts of 58 to 73 miles per hour. Monsoon season runs from June 15 to September 30, and wind-driven storms also arrive in spring. The practical result is that wind is the more frequent roof problem, hail the occasional one, and both do their worst on roofs the desert sun has already weakened.
This page explains the damage. It does not tell you whether a particular storm damaged your roof, because only an inspection can do that. We are a referral service, not a roofer or an insurance adjuster, and we do not help with claims.
What hail damage looks like on each roof type
Soft metals such as vents, flashing and the rooftop air unit are often the first clue, since they dent when other surfaces do not show it.
| Roof type | What to look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Flat roof (TPO, mod-bit, coating) | Dents or bruises in the membrane, cracked or pitted coating, torn seams | Hail can fracture a brittle sun-aged membrane and open a path for water |
| Spray foam roof | Dimples, punctures or exposed foam where the topcoat is broken | Foam is sealed by its topcoat; exposed foam breaks down in UV |
| Tile (clay or concrete) | Cracked or chipped tile, broken ridge and hip caps | Broken tile is a direct opening to the underlayment |
| Asphalt shingle | Bruised spots, granule loss in splotches, exposed mat | Granule loss shortens shingle life |
| Metal | Dents in panels, bent flashing, damaged seams | Cosmetic dents are not always a leak risk, but loose fasteners and seams are |
| Vents, flashing, cooler housings | Dents in soft metal | A quick sign hail did reach the roof |
What wind does to a roof in the Borderland
Wind often does its damage in two steps: the gust loosens a detail, and the next rain finds it. That is why a roof can look fine after a windy week and leak a month later.
- Lifted, creased or missing shingles, usually along the edges, ridges and the corner facing the wind
- Slipped tile and loosened ridge or hip caps where old mortar or foam has let go
- Parapet caps and coping lifted or pulled loose, opening the wall to water
- Peeled flashing and torn membrane edges on flat roofs
- Debris impact from branches, loose gravel and outdoor items
- Dust packed into drains and scuppers, which sets up ponding in the next storm
How to check your roof after a hail or wind storm
- Walk the yard and look for shingle pieces, tile fragments, loose gravel and metal debris.
- Look at the roof from the ground with binoculars: missing or lifted material, dents in vents, open caps.
- Check the ceilings and attic for new stains, damp insulation or daylight.
- Look for ponding on a flat roof the day after rain.
- Take dated photos of everything, from the ground. Do not climb a wet or hot roof.
- Book a free inspection if you see any of the above, or if a storm was severe even without visible damage.
What a roofer checks that you cannot
An inspection looks at the membrane surface and seams, the condition of flashing and sealant, the underlayment under lifted tile, the fasteners on metal and the drains. On a flat roof it can include a moisture reading to find water the surface does not show. The roofer photographs what is found so you can see it, and separates storm damage from age-related wear in the written findings. That distinction matters for insurance, because policies generally cover sudden damage, not wear.
Insurance after hail or wind: what Texas law says
A hail or wind loss may be covered; a roof worn out by age usually is not. With an actual-cash-value policy the payment shrinks as the roof ages. See roof age and home insurance. Texas rules protect you on the contractor side: it is illegal for a contractor to offer to waive, rebate or absorb your deductible, a roofer may not act as your public adjuster or negotiate your claim, and contracts of $1,000 or more tied to an insurance settlement must carry a notice that you owe the deductible. Problems can be reported to the Texas Attorney General at 800-621-0508.
We do not file or negotiate claims and do not recommend anyone who does it for you. If you are thinking of filing, talk to your insurance company, then use the free inspection and written estimate to understand what the roof actually needs.
Before the next storm
Inspect between April and June, clear drains, reseal parapet caps and flashing, trim branches and photograph the roof's condition. The monsoon roof damage checklist has the full list.

Questions homeowners ask
Does El Paso get hail?
Occasionally. The National Weather Service has documented one-inch hail in the El Paso area during monsoon storms. Wind is the more frequent roof problem.
How do I know if hail damaged my roof?
Dented vents and flashing, cracked tile, bruised or granule-stripped shingles, and pitted coating are signs. Only an inspection can confirm roof damage.
Can wind damage a flat roof?
Yes. Wind lifts parapet caps and flashing and peels membrane edges, which lets water in at the next rain.
How much does hail or wind damage repair cost?
Wind damage to shingles or flashing commonly runs $500 to $3,000, tile replacement $250 to $900 and parapet flashing $400 to $1,500, as modelled orientation ranges.
Will insurance pay for hail or wind damage?
Possibly, for sudden covered damage. You pay the deductible, and in Texas a contractor cannot waive it. We do not help with claims.
How soon after a storm should I get the roof checked?
Within days if you see damage or leaks, and photograph first. Without visible damage, an inspection before the next monsoon is still sensible.
