Canutillo is a census-designated place of 6,212 people in the 2020 census, sitting at about 3,770 feet along the Rio Grande northwest of the city of El Paso. It is served by ZIP codes 79835 and 79932 and by Canutillo Independent School District. The housing is a blend of older farm-valley homes with block and adobe walls and flat roofs, plus newer subdivisions with asphalt shingle or low-slope roofs on stucco, so one neighborhood can hold three different roof jobs.
Valley roofs here deal with the same sun, wind and short monsoon downpours as the rest of the county, and the problems are familiar: ponding on flat sections, drains and scuppers clogged by cottonwood debris, dried-out sealant at vents and parapet flashing that has pulled away from thick walls. Many homes have been added onto over the years, and each addition adds a roof-to-roof transition where leaks start.
Canutillo is unincorporated, and El Paso County's own planning page states that Texas law does not allow the county to issue building permits, so a roofer has to confirm what applies to your parcel. The licensed roofer we refer is used to the question and sorts it out as part of the job, starting with a free inspection of the roof, the drains and the attic.
