El Paso's monsoon season runs from June 15 to September 30, according to the National Weather Service, and delivers roughly half of the year's rain, about five of the nine inches that fall in a typical year, between July and September. The storms bring flash-flood rain, gusty outflow winds, blowing dust and occasional hail. The Weather Service has documented gusts of 58 to 73 miles per hour, and one-inch hail has been reported in El Paso and Dona Ana counties in monsoon storms. Hail is occasional here; most monsoon roof damage is water finding a weak detail and wind lifting what the sun has already dried out.
This guide is for the morning after a storm, or the month before the season. It covers what to check from the ground, what a roofer looks for, what repairs cost, and what Texas law says about insurance and contractors. We are a referral service; a vetted local roofer does the inspection and the work.
Signs of monsoon roof damage
Check from the ground with binoculars and take dated photos. Do not climb a wet roof.
- Ceiling stains or drips that appeared during or after a storm, especially near exterior walls and under flat roofs
- Standing water on a flat roof more than a day after the storm
- Missing, lifted or creased shingles, or shingle pieces in the yard
- Slipped or cracked tile, and displaced ridge or hip caps
- Debris or dust packed into drains, scuppers and valleys
- Bent or loose flashing at walls, vents, chimneys and cooler curbs
- Dents in soft metal such as vents and flashing after hail
What monsoon damage costs to repair
These are El Paso market orientation ranges, not quotes. Storm damage that exposes decking or insulation to water adds to the scope.
| Damage | Typical repair range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Wind damage to shingles or flashing | $500 – $3,000 | May include deck repair where water got in |
| Replace cracked or slipped tile | $250 – $900 | Depends on tile match and access |
| Clear and reseal a drain or scupper | $200 – $700 | Ponding is a leading cause of flat-roof leaks |
| Repair parapet flashing or coping | $400 – $1,500 | Common after a first heavy storm |
| Emergency dry-in for an active leak | $300 – $800 | Credited if you proceed with the repair |
Insurance after a storm: what Texas law says
Insurance covers sudden, covered damage, and a wind or hail loss may qualify while a long-running leak usually does not. With an actual-cash-value policy the payment shrinks with the roof's age; see roof age and home insurance. Texas law also protects you from the contractor side. It is illegal for a contractor to offer to waive, rebate or absorb your deductible, and you must pay it. A roofer may not act as your public adjuster, negotiate your claim or promise to recover "every dime." Contracts of $1,000 or more tied to an insurance settlement must include a notice that you owe the deductible. Problems can be reported to the Texas Attorney General at 800-621-0508.
Be careful with anyone who knocks on your door after a storm. A free inspection you book yourself, with the price in writing and time to decide, is a better path than a same-day signature.
